Passive Home Construction

CORNERSTONE is educated in Passive Home Construction by PHIUS (Passive House Institute). Passive Home Construction is a voluntary international building standard that creates energy efficiency and reduces a buildings ecological footprint.

While the standard for renovating an existing structure and building a new structure vary slightly; both result in ultra-low energy buildings that require minimal energy for both cooling and heating to maintain a comfortable interior climate. Often reducing energy costs up to 90%, these structures are extremely well insulated…virtually air-tight. The building design uses passive measures such as orientation, insulation, heat recovery, solar energy, solar shading and the elimination of thermal bridges and incidental internal heat sources. These airtight buildings have a continuous supply of filtered fresh air while exhausting stale air. This exchange creates a balanced and controlled ventilation and high-efficiency heat exchange.
